PSC Q508
Overview
The Product Service Code (PSC) framework is the federal government’s standardized taxonomy for labeling the types of products and services acquired in procurement records. PSCs are entered in FPDS/SAM to indicate what was purchased, support spend analysis, and align reporting; the PSC Manual on Acquisition.gov documents maintenance, management, and use of PSCs. 1
PSC Q508 is the Medical — Hematology and Oncology service code. Official guidance defines it to include hematologists and oncologists (MD/DO) and physician assistants who specialize in hematology and/or oncology for adults and children, and it lists related inclusions and exclusions to guide FPDS coding and reporting. 1

What this PSC covers
- Hematology clinical physician services and consultations. 1
- Oncology clinical physician services and consultations. 1
- Adult and pediatric hematology/oncology physician assistant services. 1

Related NAICS and PSC codes
- Omitted — no official NAICS crosswalk for Q508 is specified in the PSC Manual in a way that authoritatively maps specific NAICS codes to this PSC; see the PSC Manual for guidance. 1
Exclusions and overlaps
- Services expressly excluded from Q508 include nursing and medical assistant roles (mapped to Q401), family and internal medicine (Q509), pediatrics (Q516), surgical oncologists and other surgical specialties (Q523), and radiation oncology which is listed under radiology codes (Q522). These exclusions guide selection of the single predominant PSC for FPDS reporting. 1
FPDS reporting and coding guidance
- FPDS data element 8A (“Product or Service Code”) should be populated based on the predominant product or service purchased; contracts that are predominately physician hematology/oncology services should be reported under Q508. For FPDS search and operational help, use FPDS ezSearch and the FPDS help pages. 2
Frequently asked questions
-
What types of clinicians are explicitly included under PSC Q508?
Hematologists and oncologists (MD/DO) and physician assistants who specialize in hematology and/or oncology for adults and children are explicitly included under Q508. 1 -
Are nurse practitioners or registered nurses coded to Q508 when supporting oncology clinics?
No. Advanced practice registered nurses, clinical nurse specialists, registered nurses, licensed practical/vocational nurses, and medical assistants are excluded from Q508 and are generally reported under nursing PSCs such as Q401. 1 -
Should surgical oncologists be reported under Q508?
Surgical oncologists and pediatric surgical oncologists are excluded from Q508 and should be coded under the surgery PSC group (for example, Q523). 1 -
How does FPDS determine which PSC to use when a contract includes mixed medical services?
FPDS guidance directs selection of the PSC that best represents the predominant product or service by dollar value or purpose; when several services appear, the predominant service drives the FPDS 8A PSC entry. Use FPDS ezSearch/help for operational examples. 2
