PSC 1677

SPACE VEHICLE REMOTE CONTROL SYSTEMS

Overview

The Product Service Code (PSC) is a standardized taxonomy the U.S. government uses to categorize supplies, services, and research and development in contracting. Agencies apply PSCs to contract actions to consistently classify what is being bought, enabling governmentwide tracking, analysis, and reporting. PSCs are managed and updated through the PSC Manual and are a key FPDS reporting element. 1

PSC 1677 — Space Vehicle Remote Control Systems — covers remote control systems for space vehicles and components specifically designed for those systems. Per the PSC Manual, it excludes internal (built-in) control systems and items designed for use with both guided missile and space vehicle systems. The code is used when reporting awards in FPDS and appears as a filterable attribute in SAM.gov contract opportunity search. 1

What this PSC covers

  • Space vehicle remote control systems used to command or control space vehicles. 1
  • Specifically designed components of space vehicle remote control systems. 1
  • Systems and components intended solely for space vehicle remote control (not dual-use with guided missiles). 1
  • Excludes internal (built-in) control systems installed in or on the space vehicle; those fall under PSC 1675. 1
  • Excludes components designed for use with both guided missile and space vehicle systems; classify under the appropriate guided missile class instead. 1
  • Coverage boundaries align with adjacent aerospace PSCs for launchers and handling/servicing equipment rather than onboard controls. 1

Boundary and coding guidance

  • Use PSC 1677 when the predominant deliverable is a remote control system for a space vehicle or a component specifically designed for that system; FPDS requires selecting the PSC that represents the majority of the ultimate contract value. 3
  • If the item is an internal/built-in control component for installation on a space vehicle, select PSC 1675 rather than 1677. 1
  • If equipment is for handling, servicing, or launching space vehicles (e.g., ground servicing or launchers), consider PSCs 1735 or 1725 instead of 1677. 1

Reporting and market research tips

  • In FPDS, PSC is captured in data element 8A “Product or Service Code”; ensure the code reflects the predominant item being procured. 3
  • For market research and opportunity discovery, SAM.gov allows filtering by PSC (including 1677) when searching contract opportunities and awards. 5
  • FPDS ezSearch supports exact PSC filters; use the 4-character code “1677” to pull finalized awards coded to this class. 6

Frequently asked questions

  • What exactly does PSC 1677 include?

    • PSC 1677 includes space vehicle remote control systems and components specifically designed for those systems. It does not include internal (built-in) control systems or components intended for both guided missile and space vehicle systems. 1
  • How is PSC 1677 different from PSC 1675?

    • PSC 1677 covers external remote control systems and their specifically designed components, whereas PSC 1675 covers components and accessories installed in or on space vehicles, including internal (built-in) control systems. 1
  • Where can awards using PSC 1677 be found?

    • Awards coded to PSC 1677 are reported in FPDS and searchable via ezSearch by entering the exact PSC. SAM.gov also exposes PSC filters for opportunities and award data access. 6
  • Does PSC 1677 cover software-only remote control applications?

    • Not specified by official sources. The PSC Manual defines the class at the system/component level and does not enumerate software-only treatment; refer to solicitation instructions and agency-specific guidance. 2
  • Which policy governs how PSCs are selected on awards?

    • FPDS guidance specifies PSC as a mandatory data element (8A) and directs selection of the code representing the predominant amount of supplies or services being procured; references include FAR 4.601(b)(3) and DFARS 253.204-70. 3
