PSC 1427

GUIDED MISSILE SUBSYSTEMS

Overview

The Product and Service Code (PSC) is a governmentwide taxonomy used to classify what the U.S. government buys so contract actions can be consistently tracked, analyzed, and reported in procurement systems such as FPDS. The PSC Manual, maintained on Acquisition.gov, governs the structure, definitions, and usage of these codes. 2

PSC 1427 designates Guided Missile Subsystems. Per the PSC Manual, this class covers only combinations or assemblies of two or more end items—each properly classified elsewhere in Federal Supply Group 14—that are identified and issued as a single item of supply. It excludes complete guided missile systems as well as standalone end items, parts, attachments, and accessories not combined as a single supply item. 2

What this PSC covers

  • Combination assemblies that form a guided missile subsystem when delivered as one stock-listed item of supply. 2
  • Subsystems composed of multiple end items (each classifiable elsewhere in Group 14) integrated and issued as a single unit. 2
  • Pre-integrated assemblies uniquely designed for use within guided missile systems, short of a complete system. 2
  • Kits or sets that, in combination, constitute a discrete guided missile subsystem recorded under one item identifier. 2
  • Items within the guided missile domain that are neither complete systems nor individual components, when issued as a single integrated assembly. 2

Classification boundaries for PSC 1427

As defined in the PSC Manual: 2

  • Includes only combinations or assemblies of two or more end items identified as a single item of supply.
  • Excludes complete guided missile systems (see 1425).
  • Excludes individual end items, assemblies, subassemblies, attachments, accessories, or parts when not combined and issued as one item of supply (those are classified in other Group 14 classes).

FPDS reporting considerations

  • PSC is captured in FPDS as data element 8A (“Product or Service Code”) to indicate what was purchased for the reported action. 2
  • When a contract covers multiple items, agencies report the PSC that represents the predominant product or service for that action. 2

Usage in practice

FPDS records show Department of Defense contract actions reported under PSC 1427, illustrating use of this class for guided missile subsystem efforts where the deliverable is an integrated assembly rather than a complete missile system. 3

Frequently asked questions

  • What does PSC 1427 include?
It covers guided missile subsystem combinations or assemblies made up of two or more end items—each otherwise classifiable elsewhere in Group 14—when those items are issued together as a single item of supply. It does not cover standalone parts or accessories by themselves. 2

  • How is PSC 1427 different from PSC 1425?
PSC 1425 is reserved for complete guided missile systems. PSC 1427 is used for subsystem assemblies only; complete systems are explicitly excluded from 1427 by the PSC Manual notes. 2

  • When should PSC 1430 or 1440 be used instead of 1427?
Use PSC 1430 for guided missile remote control systems and PSC 1440 for guided missile launchers. Those classes are distinct from subsystem assemblies reported under PSC 1427. 2

  • Are spare parts or single components for a subsystem coded 1427?
No. PSC 1427 excludes individual end items, assemblies, subassemblies, attachments, accessories, or parts when they are not combined and issued as a single item of supply. Such items are classified in other Group 14 classes. 2

  • Is there an official NAICS mapping for PSC 1427?
Not specified by official sources 1. The PSC Manual defines PSC classes but does not prescribe NAICS mappings for specific PSCs; agencies determine NAICS separately during acquisition planning.
