NAICS 112112

Cattle Feedlots

Overview

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is the production-oriented standard federal statistical agencies use to classify business establishments for collecting, analyzing, and publishing data on the U.S. economy. Developed under the auspices of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and adopted in 1997 to replace SIC, NAICS was jointly created by the U.S. Economic Classification Policy Committee (ECPC), Statistics Canada, and Mexico’s INEGI. 1

NAICS 112112 designates establishments primarily engaged in feeding cattle for fattening—i.e., feedlot operations within Animal Production. Census cross-references clarify nearby boundaries, including stockyards used only for transportation (classified in 488999) and distinctions from beef ranching (112111) and dairy operations (112120). 2

What this NAICS covers

  • Feeding cattle for fattening in feedlot operations prior to sale. 2
  • Operating beef cattle feedlots (except stockyards used solely for transportation). 2
  • Finishing cattle to market weight within Industry Group 11211. 2
  • Activities that raise or fatten animals for sale within Subsector 112. 6
  • Excludes stockyards for transport only (classified in 488999). 2
  • Excludes ranching/raising cattle (classified in 112111). 2
  • Excludes dairy milking and dual-purpose ranching (classified in 112120 and 112130). 2

Data coverage and 2022 implementation

  • The 2022 Economic Census does not cover NAICS Sector 11 industries; agriculture (including 112112) is out of scope for that program. 4
  • Census programs are transitioning to 2022 NAICS through 2027; 2022 NAICS is the current vintage used for new releases and restatements where applicable. 3
