NAICS 111339

Other Noncitrus Fruit Farming

Overview

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is the U.S. government’s standard for classifying business establishments to support the collection, analysis, and publication of economic statistics. Developed under the Office of Management and Budget with the Economic Classification Policy Committee and in partnership with Statistics Canada and Mexico’s INEGI, NAICS was adopted in 1997 to replace the SIC system and enable cross-country comparability. 1
NAICS 111339 (Other Noncitrus Fruit Farming) covers establishments primarily engaged in growing noncitrus fruits other than apples, grapes, and berries, and excluding fruit–tree nut combinations. Illustrative examples include apricots, peaches, cherries, bananas, pineapples, coffee, dates, figs, and prunes. Government statistical programs and procurement stakeholders use this code to identify farm-level production; post-harvest processing, such as artificial drying, is classified elsewhere. 2

Frequently asked questions

  • What does NAICS 111339 include?
Establishments primarily engaged in growing noncitrus fruits other than apples, grapes, and berries. Examples include apricots, peaches, cherries, bananas, pineapples, coffee, dates, figs, and prunes. Coverage extends through the farm-gate point of sale or price determination. 2

  • Are activities like artificial drying, canning, or other processing covered by 111339?
No. Post-harvest processing is outside this industry. Artificial drying belongs to NAICS 311423; canning and other processing are covered in the fruit and vegetable manufacturing industries, not farm production. 2

  • How is greenhouse or under-cover fruit production classified?
Fruit grown under glass or protective cover is classified in NAICS 111419 rather than 111339, which covers open-field orchard and grove operations for noncitrus fruits. 2

  • How does 111339 differ from berry or combination operations?
Berry farming is split between NAICS 111333 (strawberries) and 111334 (other berries). Mixed fruit and tree-nut operations where no single family dominates are classified in NAICS 111336. 2

  • When was NAICS established, and what version is current?
NAICS was developed under OMB auspices and adopted in 1997 to replace the SIC system. The current vintage in use across Census programs is the 2022 NAICS, with implementation described by the Census Bureau’s timeline. 3
